Turnitin detected that my essay was written by AI, but I wrote it myself. What should I do?

AI detection tools are not always accurate and may produce false positives. If you have written your work independently, you should not panic but communicate with your instructor and take steps to demonstrate your authorship.

Remember to:

  • Follow the University’s academic integrity guidelines
  • Disclose any permitted AI use (if applicable) in accordance with course, faculty or publisher's requirements
  • Keep drafts, notes, outlines, or earlier versions of your work as evidence of your writing process
  • Be prepared to explain your ideas, structure, and development of the essay if requested
  • Review your writing to ensure that it reflects your understanding, interpretation and originality

Please note:

  • AI detection results alone are not definitive proof of unethical use of AI
  • Do not attempt to modify your work solely to “avoid detection”
